Waterloo Region RISES for Climate Justice

Waterloo Region RISES

Waterloo Region stood united on November 29, at Waterloo Town Square, joining the global movement for climate justice. The event emphasized the crucial link between Indigenous sovereignty and climate justice, advocating for Canada to ratify the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and reject projects like the Trans Mountain Pipeline, which threaten Indigenous treaty and territory rights while exacerbating environmental harm. The gathering honored Indigenous resistance with a heartfelt round dance led by the Big Drum and Blue Sky Singers, symbolizing solidarity with ongoing struggles for self-determination.

A Speakers Panel convened to explore Canada's responsibilities in achieving climate justice, especially in light of the upcoming COP25 UN climate negotiations in Madrid. This event showcased the region's commitment to addressing the climate crisis and advancing environmental equity for all.
